Loyola Hosts "Poetry Slam" Competition

By Marisa Massaro

Loyola’s Greyhound Collective Poetry Revival Club is sponsoring a “Poetry Slam” on April 15th for talented students from Loyola, Towson, Morgan, Goucher, and Coppin to showcase their provocative verse. The literary festivities will be held from 8-11p.m. in the 3rd floor reading room.

The competition will feature three to five poets from each college or university who will perform their poetry in Spoken Word style, a new wave of performing arts in which the verse is executed in a critical and lively tone. Spoken word poetry has become an outlet for people to verbalize their views, emotions and experiences. Each poem usually includes an intense issue such as religion, politics, sex or gender.

Judges for the competition will be Kathleen Hellen, editor for the Baltimore Review Literary Journal and journalism professor at Coppin State University. Local spoken-word poet, Borndavid McCraw, and Kenneth Carroll, a published poet, will also be judging the competition.

The power of poetry can fortify human character, fulfilling a creative reality. To think of poetry in only a judgmental aspect is a mistake because this literary genre has the power to make us aware of a realization that goes beyond the written word. Come out and support Loyola’s first poetry slam; you won’t be disappointed.
