Spike Lee Film Series Set to Wrap Wednesday

By Brittany Lee
Over the past month, the Office of Academic Affairs and Diversity, the Black Faculty, Administrators and Staff Association, the Center for Innovation in Urban Education, the College Diversity Committee, and ALANA Services have presented films at Loyola from director Spike Lee , who will be the guest speaker at Loyola's 2010 MLK Convocation in January.
The last film in this Spike Lee series, Do the Right Thing (a thought-provoking movie about racial conflict in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn), will be shown Wednesday, November 11 in the Library auditorium from 6-9 p.m. Following the movie, Loyola's own president, Father Linnane, will facilitate a question and answer session about the movie to get students and faculty thinking about the higher message behind the movie.
I think that it is definitely important for students and faculty to see Do the Right Thing in addition to other films by Lee. Lee is a very talented director who has a knack for discussing political and racial relations while still entertaining his audience. I have seen the movie several times before. Not going to spoil it for those who haven't seen it or anything, but just know that it's definitely a must see.
The MLK Convocation will take place on January 21, 2010 at 7 p.m. in Reitz Arena on Loyola's Evergreen campus. Tickets for the convocation will go on sale on this upcoming Monday November 16. General admission tickets are $30 and will be available on Ticketmaster. Tickets for Loyola students and faculty are discounted for $18 and will be available at the Loyola Box Office in the Student Center.
