Leading Loyola
By Briana Ciccarino

As the fall semester of this year comes to a close, more information is becoming available about leadership positions for next year. Three of the most widely known leadership positions on campus include being an Evergreen, a Resident Assistant, or a Service Coordinator for the Center for Community Service and Justice. Recently, these positions have been advertised all over campus.
For students who are interested, being an Evergreen means being a role model, working with first year students during summer and fall orientations, and leading other events. Resident Assistants, according to the Office of Student Life’s website, “serve as a catalyst in developing a sense of community in the House and residential area while working with the concerns of an individual or group of students.” To work at CCSJ, one can apply to be a Service Coordinator, a Creative Assistant, or a Student Assistant.
For first year student, Alexis Giuseppone, her interest is still unclear. She says she has been interested in becoming an Evergreen since her Summer Orientation this year. “I saw the Evergreens and it looked like something I’d be interested in doing,” but she feels conflicted because “being an RA, I didn’t think about doing that until I got here. I really like my RA.” Both positions have aspects she likes which include helping others and planning events. She concedes she is “nervous because both seem like tough positions to get and a lot of people are interested.” but she plans on applying to both this coming semester.
For those interested in other leadership opportunities, there are organizations such as Student Government, Peer Leadership, Outdoor Adventure Experience, OPTONS, Campus Ministry, Ignatian Society, and Relay for Life. Some residential buildings are even hosting events such as “Be a Top Hound” with a panel of students from these organizations who are leaders on campus.
Applications for most positions are available online. The first application deadline to become an Evergreen will be sometime in January. To apply to be an RA, applications need to be submitted by January 23. To work at CCSJ, applications are due January 25.
