Project Mexico Auction

Loyola’s CCSJ hosts auction and Fiesta for those in need.
On Thursday, November 17 in McGuire Hall from 5:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m, CCSJ hosted their annual Project Mexico/Encounter El Salvador Auction. A full crowd of students and staff gathered for a variety of delicious Mexican food, as well as many great prizes. The auction was loud and crazy, but surely enough, festive.
The auction is a fundraiser for a 10-day trip of service and education in Mexicali, Mexico, and San Diego. Next year, twenty Loyola University Maryland sophomores, juniors, and seniors along with two faculty staff administrators will be traveling to work and live with Mexican border communities. These communities are materially impoverished, but enriched spiritually and culturally. The auction itself is an important factor to make the trip possible.
Sara Gymrek, a freshman Spanish education major, thought that the auction was very exciting. “Not only was the event for a good cause, but the food was delicious!” Some of the food included tacos, spicy cornucopias, and loaded nachos.
Katie Brennan, a sophomore biology major, also enjoyed the food at Project Mexico. “There was a great array of different Mexican foods set up buffet style: tacos, nachos, and even churros,” she said. “All of my favorites!”
Allison Nuara, a sophomore digital media major, is a member of the singing group “Belles” at Loyola. This group was auctioned at Project Mexico. She said that it was weird that her group was being auctioned. “It was weird standing up there and not a lot of people were bidding.”
The Project Mexico and Encounter El Salvador Auction’s annual fundraising goal is over $20,000. Most of the fundraising comes from the auction. Past donations have included bikes, electronics equipment, videos, music, tickets, kitchen items, toys, books, and much more.
All donations that were made proceeded to support the program and the Mexican and Salvadoran communities with whom CCSJ works with. Make sure to go to next year’s auction for some food and fun!
