S.B.O. Reaches Out to Loyola
When people think of Spring Break Outreach, they think of students going to impoverished areas of the country, where for one week they offer their help and aid to poverty stricken citizens. In fact, the “outreach” of these students goes far beyond one week of service. Students who participated in Spring Break Outreach this year gathered on the quad on April 7 to raise awareness about the issues facing these struggling areas of the country.
Two students who sat at an information table for Camden, NJ spoke with me about what they learned while in Camden for their Outreach program. According to one student, much of the waste created in Southern New Jersey is housed at a facility in Camden, NJ. They believe that Camden has the potential to be a beautiful city, but the damage caused by the waste facility is holding it back from reaching its potential.
“We chose to raise awareness about waste management in Camden,” said a Loyola sophomore at the table. “It’s not something you really think about every day.” The students chose this issue in an attempt to bring some knowledge about it to students, in hopes that they too will reach out to the community.
While raising awareness about the issues, the Outreach students gathered signatures of passing students and teachers. These signatures will not only help raise awareness, but the Outreach students also plan to send the signatures to a New Jersey State Senator. This action hopefully will further stress that Camden’s poor waste management is a serious issue that needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
