Frank Sesno Lecture

On Thursday April 22, in McGuire Hall at Loyola University Maryland, journalist and CNN correspondent Frank Sesno spoke at the annual Caulfiled Lecture. Sesnso spoke on the evolution of journalism and the way we communicate. He said, “ Never before in history have people had so much access to so much information. We found a lot of truth in what he had to say. With a click of a button we can obtain the news from virtually anywhere in the world. Our generation has grown up using technologies such as blogging and social media. This innovative way to report the news has allowed the public not only to publishthe news as they see it but also to share their opinions on what others are reporting. Journalism he said was dying because no one wanted to sit around and read the news. Gone are the times when families used to subscribe to a newspaper or sit around a television to watch a show together. Tivos and websites like Hulu.com allow us to watch televisions shows on our own time. Sesno presented the audience with start-up sites like Globalpost.com, which allows aspiring photo journalists to post their work. The main message of the lecture was that our generation was the future of journalism and that we were going to invent new ways to report the news. A short clip of a somewhat frightening CNN documentary called was shown. This documentary about the after effects of a hypothetical storm like Hurricane Katrina was an example of theway news can be reported. Overall, we felt that Senso was really funny and that his sense of humor made the lecture more interesting. The lecture itself gave us hope for a dying industry by showing us unconventional forms of reporting.
