Lady Lax Hounds had the “Power in Pink” Over Stony Brook The Lady Lacrosse Hounds were victorious in all aspects on Wednesday, March 24 as they defeated Stony Brook, 18-7, and raised money for the fight against breast cancer in their annual “Power in Pink” game.

Junior Johanna Gibson said the win was an added bonus. “We went out and played for those who aren't able to play. The message of the day was to support a cure for breast cancer.”

There was plenty of support from players and fans who were outfitted in pink gear on a beautiful afternoon at the Ridley Athletic Complex. The Greyhounds came out strong against the Seawolves in the first few minutes of the game as junior midfielder, Cara Filippelli, scored the first goals of the competition. This momentum kept the Hounds ahead for the rest of the game. Grace Gavin and Emily Gibson added to the effort with five and four goals, respectively. Both girls also lead the team by adding two assists each throughout the game.

The second half of the game was more aggressive on the Seawolves’ part as they put four goals on the board, but they could not get ahead to take a lead over Loyola. The Hounds were aggressive and successfully outshot Stony Brook, 40-18, and had an advantage in draw controls and ground balls throughout the game, according the Loyola Greyhounds’ website.

In addition to the extra inspiration to win the game in support of breast cancer, the women’s head coach, Jen Adams, attributes the recent wins to the new field. “The girls have established this as their home field, and they are going to play that way every time they step on.” The scoreboard has been proving this to be true, because they are currently undefeated at the “RAC,” but Adams knows she has to keep her team working hard as they take on Cincinatti this weekend. “Cincinnati is tough and athletic. We need to be prepared for a tough game.” The competition will be part of a double-header occurring this weekend at the Ridley Athletic Complex starting with the men taking on Towson at 12 p.m.
