Reactions to chapters 1-3

By Shannon McMahon

One thing I found interesting about chapter 1 was linking Berners-Lee's idea for the internet to the way wikipedia.org works. Berners-Lee invented the worldwide web in order for information to be shared throughout the world. This is true for wikipedia, as it is a common information space where anyone can view and edit the details.

Mars, Venus, and Earth

Mars, Venus, and Earth

by Daniel Barry

Men are from Mars.  Women are from Venus.  This is an indisputable scientific fact, proclaimed by 8-year-olds from every elementary school in our country.  Venus is clearly the more introspective of the two planets.  Issues on Venus must be extremely complex for women to have developed the intricate thinking processes that baffle men.  There must have been dangers in gathering food, for the selective gathering skills of shopping are mind-blowing.

Mars must be a land of adventure, where men can do stupid things and remain unharmed.  The choices must be few, because men did not really develop the same abilities to think through every alternative in the same way women did.  Everything must also be a hunt.  There is nothing around to be gathered, which explains why men do not peruse in stores, but in fact get what they need, kill it, and drag it back to the car.

This must mean the essay is from Earth.  Where else could men fail at things that come so easily to women and women get so pissed at men?  Where can men and women explore issues of difference and similarity?  The only place is earth.  If men and women had stayed on their respective planets, the essay might never have come along, grown out of frustration with the opposite sex.  Both sexes try to explore similar issues about their roles in society, gender specific issues, and a slew of other interrelated issues.  Men and women in the essay are trying to dig into things that bother or intrigue.  Women:  Can’t live with them, can’t live without them.  Men: If a man speaks in the woods and no one is there to hear him, he is still wrong.  And the dialogue continues.
