News and Business
The newsroom portrays a hectic work scene with a company involved in news reporting. Convincing interviews with qualified guest speakers are vital to the company’s success, because the interviewers help the nightly news flow smoothly. The protagonist, Will McAvoy, is a witty, stern man who seems to have an abrasive personality at first. Will is actually a clever businessman and cares about his workers, even though they are new. He is well-respected in his position, and even when faced with an unprofessional news performance involving un qualified guest speakers, the CEO of the company, Mr. Skinner, still thinks highly of Will has confidence that he can improve the situation. The notion that “truth hurts” is relevant throughout the show. In the opening episode, Will reluctantly expresses his true feelings about America and goes against everyone else in the audience. He is positioned between two other news reporters and explains how America was once the best country but currently is not. The audience was shocked by his response and the situation gained mass media attention and caused the executive producer, George to switch to the later nightly news show, leaving Will with an entirely new staff. Newsroom also includes the relationship trouble between Will and ex girlfriend MacKenzie McHale, the new executive producer. Their former relationship sparks trouble for them throughout the show and Mackenzie cares and worries about how other people portray Will. Will and MacKenzie’s relationship problems add drama and friction to the show’s plot.
Online Porn Addiction
By Marisa Massaro, Staff
Lately I've been researching a lot about why some people are addicted to online pornography. (It's my chosen topic for my research paper) I came across this article in New York Magazine about how addiction to online pornography is actually destroying relationships. "Dale Lach, a paralegal who helps people represent themselves in their own divorces, says she’s seeing more and more women who want to leave their husbands because of porn," the article stated. The article then continues to give real examples of couples who have been faced with this issue. However, if this issue is such a grave problem that has the capability to destroy lives, why isn't it listed in the DSM-IV as an actual mental disease? In the 2013 version, there will be some revisions, however, "addiction to pornography" won't be listed explicitly. It will be considered a "hypersexual disorder" because instead of focusing on the underlying issues, rather than the surface.
