Web.Studies Chapter 1-3 Reaction

By Kari Brickowski

Web.Studies begins by discussing the major transitions that have occurred in Internet history. As with any subject, to fully understand the implications today one must first understand a brief history, which is exactly what Web.Studies provides. The short description of Tim Berners-Lee was extremely interesting. When I typically think of the Internet, I rarely give it a face. By learning more about the optimistic creator the Internet became more personal as opposed to the machine like quality I had previously constructed in my mind.

Another interesting characteristic that Web.Studies brought to the subject was the difference between the World Wide Web and the Internet itself. Before reading, I used the two words interchangeably. Although, now I recognize the difference and realize the World Wide Web runs on the Internet.

Web.Studies continues by reviewing the multiple ways in which the Internet can be used. There are clearly two sides, including a business oriented usage and a personal form. Even within the first three chapters, this textbook does an adequate job of explaining how to use the Internet effectively and efficiently. Various websites are listed that inform readers how to create blogs, and other personal websites. This textbook also lists and explains aspects that can enhance websites such as formatting, hyperlinks, and overall aesthetic appeal.

Although, many of the issues discussed in the first three chapters were interesting, I personally found the discussion about emotions the most thought provoking. The textbook details the manner in which the Internet has connected people regardless of location, and how the Internet has altered traditional social cues. These new relationships are changing the way in which our society thinks and acts, therefore it is important to study the topic.

Overall, my first experience reading Web.Studies was positive. The history presented allowed me further my knowledge of a technology I utilize everyday and I was also made aware of how influential the Internet has become in modern culture. Lastly, I enjoyed the manner in which Web.Studies discussed the importance of studying Internet implications.
